Brrrrr!

Well it has certainly got cold out there! I can't remember having snow so early in winter - usually it seems to come after Christmas. I'm finding that even in the house I get cold and if you are suffering from hair loss I would recommend going for one of our warmest hats - the lovely microfleece. It's light to wear but really does the trick in keeping you nice and warm.

For a dressier look, the rich velvets work really well too, with that extra bit of style!

New Turbans for hair loss

Check out our new turbans, this very popular style comes in a range of plains and patterns. In honour of the royal engagement we have included one in 'Kate Middleton Blue' !

The turban is great for covering up after chemo hair loss, by wrapping the ties around your head you gain a bit of extra coverage and shape - not to mention that you will look stylish too!

Altnagevin gets 12 Scalp Cooling machines

It's good news to see that Altnagevin Hospital has received 12 scalp cooling machines. By keeping the head cool during chemotherapy they can prevent or at least reduce hair loss caused by chemo. They dont work for everyone, it seems to depend on what chemo you are on and like so many other things with treatment, everyone has their own reaction. But for those who it works for it must be fantastic not to lose their hair.

Well Breast Cancer is in the news yet again - some good news this time. Death from Breast Cancer is down by 26.4%! This is up to 2006 and I would imagine the figures are even better from that time to now. The improvement in chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and in hormonal treatments such as tamoxifen, are giving great hope to those diagnosed with this disease.

As Breast Check wasn't up and running fully in Ireland during that time, it is unlikely that it had a major impact on the figures to 2006, but maybe more so since then.

Of course the debate continues about the benefits of screening and the suggestion by some that it leads to 'over-diagnosis' with perhaps unnecessary treatment.

Its comforting to know that there is constant work going on in scientific and medical circles to improve the treatment for many cancers, including Breast Cancer. Right now there is the '7th Annual European Breast Cancer Conference', http://www.ecco-org.ue. They are presenting interesting findings, for example using genes to identify what type of chemotherapy will best suit an individual. A truly personalised treatment plan is on the way!

Exciting possibilities in treatment for Breast Cancer

Sheffield University has made what could be a great discovery, the result of which would be to greatly shorten the time need for chemotherapy. It will be great if, in a few years, we can look back and shake our heads at the idea that a patient had to have 6 months or more of chemo.
Here is a link to the full article http://www.shef.ac.uk/mediacentre/2010/1476.html. Basically they have found that giving 2 chemo drugs in a particular order can quickly reduce the size of tumours.

The tyranny of Positive Thinking

For anyone who feels more than slightly frustrated at the suggestion that they must should be thinking positively, while they are undergoing scary and unpleaseant cancer treatment , I recommend this article which appeared in todays 'Guardian' newspaper: http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2010/jan/02/cancer-positive-thinking-barbara-ehrenreich

It is a good-humoured view of a thorny issue - does positive thinking affect your prognosis?
